Posted on Thursday, December 18th, 2008 at 10:38 pmI have done a lot of things throughout my life both for pleasure and for my work. But nothing has captivated me as much as horses. I have always loved nature and all animals but I am fascinated with horses. I know many people are. People have asked me what is it? I’m going to try to put feelings, sensations, experiences-magical and otherwise into words.
I know from the onset I will fall short because if you allow yourself to be still and silent enough when you meet a horse, the horse will impart to you the nonverbal and indescribable sensations that can be felt in your body. It goes beyond your conscious thoughts and familiar ground. It can be powerful, scary, comforting, magical, healing and a Oneness. It is no wonder many equestrians have gotten into horse therapy.
When I stand next to Buck and look into his eyes there is a sense of other worldliness. And I if am still enough I meet him in another dimension, where there is no time, the in between space. I am in between the past and the future, just in the Now. A feeling of something greater than myself flows in. It could be called Love, or Mother Nature, Energy or Spirit. None of the words describe it fully. It just is an experience that flows from him to me and me to him through our hearts.
Next thing is being on the back of a horse. I have often wondered why a 1000 pound animal would allow a rider on their back and do it’s bidding. If I was a horse I certainly wouldn’t. But then I am not a horse. I know when the horse is treated as a partner and with respect they will do almost anything for the rider.
As I sit astride Buck, I am focused and feel myself getting in sync with the rhythm of his body. His mane is flying in the wind. He enjoys stretching out and does an easy canter. I think about going to the left and before I give him the cue he is already going to left. Rider and horse are one enjoying the breeze of the summer day. I breathe easy and think trot, Buck slows to a trot. I exhale and stop riding and Buck stops. I live for those times. It brings me home to myself, my Soul and Spirit. It doesn’t get any better.
